QUESTION:

Dear Hermie. Given your years of experience with AV Installations, what are the most common things an Integrator should watch out for when doing an office installation? Signed – Curious in Kentucky

HERMIE:

Dear Curious,

That’s an easy one. Cleaning crews! If you’re doing an AV installation in a corporate office, watch out for the cleaning crews – especially the ones that work the night shift! Their daily dust off can turn your installation day into a nightmare. I can remember one time I completed a primo conference room setup – a fantastic suite of Creston products, wired and wireless touchscreens, a DigitalMedia presentation system, lighting and shading, the works! It was a beautiful job!

The next day the client called me to complain that nothing worked. After they stopped yelling and screaming at me, I said, calmly, I’ll be right over. So I schlepped back to the site, only to find that the nightly cleaning crew had unplugged the master controller in order to plug in their vacuum. Sucks, right? (The vacuum, I mean.)

So, now after every job, I make sure the critical plugs are hidden, screwed to the outlet, or labeled DO NOT TOUCH!

You asked what an integrator should watch out for at an office installation? I got two words for you: Cleaning Crews!!!
